Limescale in Swiss tap water: causes, effects and solutions

In Switzerland, more than 60% of municipalities supply water classed as "hard" to "very hard". This hardness comes mainly from water passing through the limestone and dolomitic rock of the Jura and the Prealps. The result: water rich in calcium and magnesium, perfectly drinkable, but leaving white marks everywhere.

What is water hardness?

Hardness is measured in French (°fH) or German (°dH) degrees. Above 25 °fH, water is considered hard. In Neuchâtel, Lausanne or Geneva, readings often exceed 30 °fH. It is harmless to health — the Federal Office of Public Health regularly says so — but it has concrete consequences.

The visible effects of limescale

• White deposits on taps, glassware and shower screens
• Shorter lifespan for kettles, coffee machines and washing machines
• Higher energy use: 1 mm of scale in a water heater = +10% consumption
• Tight-feeling skin and dull hair after showering

Should you worry about your health?

No. The calcium and magnesium in hard water are actually beneficial. Water can, however, carry other less desirable elements — rust particles, micro-sediments, residue from old pipes — that affect taste and clarity.

How to limit limescale day to day

Three approaches coexist: a central water softener (expensive, removes minerals), point-of-use filtration (practical, targeted), and simple regular descaling. For the kitchen and bathroom, a ceramic tap filter retains most visible particles and clearly improves clarity and taste, without altering the water's mineral composition.

Filtering is not softening: you keep the essential minerals and remove what you do not need.
